Incomplete Control was written for Marie Speziale, professor of Trumpet at the Shepherd School of Music (Rice University) and formerly the Associate Principal Trumpet of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra for 32 years. She is acknowledged as the first woman trumpeter in a major symphony orchestra and has been a wonderful friend to me as well.
Incomplete Control is the first piece I composed as a new parent. Its frenetic energy has come to represent both the joy of being a father and the accompanying craziness of life. It was recently reworked for a slightly smaller group and that smaller version was selected as a semi-finalist for the U.S. Naval Academy Band's first annual "Call for Scores" competition in 2021.
