The Last Sunset was originally written for two friends at the College-Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati who often performed together: James Ackley (University of South Carolina) and Mark Babbitt (Illinois State University). One of the main considerations was to give them a piece that displayed their ensemble ability by including many passages for them to play together in harmony as well as sections with a high degree of rhythmic interaction between the two parts. Most of the musical material is uncovered by the piano during the first minute of the piece and is developed further by the interaction of all three instruments. The end was inspired by an experience I had with close friends when we hiked up a small mountain in West Virginia to watch the final sunset of 1999 together.
