I have long considered Prelude and Scherzo to be my first serious attempt at composition. It was most certainly the piece that got me into CCM for graduate school…or perhaps it was the recording that did it. I am forever indebted to my horn instructor at Lehigh University and then member of the Philadelphia Brass, Martin Webster, who encouraged his professional quintet to premiere this rather innocent piece from an upstart young composer. The premiere and subsequent performance at the Inaugural Ceremony for Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences at Lehigh University (Colin Powell, guest speaker) in March 1996 are still among the most treasured experiences of my composition career.
