Excerpt 1            Excerpt 2

For his third symphony, Mahler had originally given various subtitles to the movements: “What the Flowers Tell Me,” “What the Trees Tell Me,” “What the Night Tells Me,” etc. The sixth and final movement carried only the subtitle “What Love Tells Me.” Though Mahler later decided to drop them, those titles made a strong impression on me, and I decided to use the last for this piece, composed for and premiered at my best friend’s wedding. Mahler’s early symphonies were among my biggest influences at that time, and my original ideas for this work were adapted from themes in the first movements of his first and second symphonies.
