Re-Emergence was composed during the most difficult time period in my musical life: my first year at Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music. After months of devoting myself entirely to music for the first time, I felt completely over-saturated and didn’t want to listen to any music, compose any music, or even be at music school at all. To help me get through this difficult time, my teacher at the time suggested some compositional exercises for me to do that would help me reconnect with my love of music. One of the exercises was to spend a lot of time exploring the piano for chords that embodied the way I felt at that time and, after finding one, to build a piece around it. Re-Emergence grew out of that idea - it is mostly based on a single chord. The manipulations are relatively straightforward, existing clearly in sound, not based on some abstract or complex ideas that only I would be aware of. The idea was to preserve whatever emotional content the chord contained that made me connect with it in the first place. I decided to use the cello because of its expressive capabilities and because it could beautifully produce the long extended lines that I had in mind.
