Hide Me in Your Arms was written for and dedicated to my wife Christina, a pianist. The piece is an adaptation of my earlier choral work, Wind on the Island,a setting of the Pablo Neruda poem of the same name anda favorite of Christy’s. The act of re-composing the piece taught me a lot about the original, particularly about the sections whose musical meaning relied so heavily on the text. For better or worse, removing the words left places that could no longer stand on their own and required removal or significant modification. The compositional struggle in this case was to create a separate work that makes sense on an abstract musical level.
