On April 6, 2013, the Murray State music department lost one of its own when Daniel Milam, a vocal major from Memphis, was killed in a car accident on his way back to Murray. Milam’s Crossing was composed in Daniel’s honor. Daniel was a student in one of my theory classes that semester, and his sudden passing was one of the toughest challenges I have faced as a professor. Writing the piece was part of the healing process for me; hopefully listening to it helped others as well.
