Eagle at Woodland Mound is based almost entirely on the two themes that open the piece. The solo tuba in the very beginning presents the first theme and the second theme is the woodwinds’ response directly following the solo. Throughout the work, one can hear the themes appear in many different guises, including in canon (sounding on top of itself but starting at different times), in different modes, in quicker rhythmic values, and extended in a variety of ways.

Eagle was commissioned by a high school band director and good friend of mine, Toby Biederman. During the composition process, I visited Toby’s band and spent an afternoon with them. We read the first few minutes of the piece during their rehearsal so they could hear a little bit of what I was writing for them. Though I love creating music, I have never enjoyed creating the titles for my music.  So, at the end of the rehearsal, Toby and I asked the students to brainstorm some ideas for what this piece should be called. Among the suggestions were such outstanding titles as Amenity, The Green Dog, Piece, and Possessed Mannequin Frolicking in Central Park. In the end, I decided to go it alone once again – Woodland Mound is a park near their school where Toby and I have played countless rounds of disc golf (scored the same way as regular golf – pars, birdies…eagles).
