Bull in a China Shop was commissioned by Brian Utley,
senior lecturer in saxophone at Vanderbilt University. The piece,
completed in pre-pandemic 2020, was inspired by our divided times.
In the not-so-long-ago past, it was said that our political differences
of opinion were explained largely by what news source we got our
information from. That news shaped everyone’s ‘facts’ …etc. The
nice thing about President Trump and his Twitter feed is that the
words themselves cannot be disputed. Everyone who can read can decide
for themselves how to feel about them—nobody needs a news personality
to tell them how they are supposed to feel. Some are horrified and
offended; some find the unfiltered, non-“politically-correct” messages
to be refreshing.
