Peter’s Cave is the result of the Lee High School Band Commissioning Project (Lee, Massachusetts) in the spring of 2007. The project included a three-day residency working with students in rehearsal and discussing with them composition and music in general. The piece takes its name from a nearby landmark where a colonial spy named Peter Wilcox hid from the British who were searching for him. While the piece is not programmatic, it does contain a few elements that may suggest imagery of Wilcox’s experiences: the snare drum at the beginning, its recurrence later as it fades into the distance, the transformation of the opening dorian dissonances into the sweet woodwind theme near the end of the work, and so on. Peter’s Cave is dedicated to Joanne Nelson, director of the Lee High School Band and head of the project, for providing her students with a unique and special opportunity to participate in the creation of a new work of art.
